ODFReader in Development for Firefox

We all know that ODF, OpenDocument Format, is great. You don't have to pay other companies to access files you created yourself. (I talked more about this in “Microsoft Owns Your Tube Top.”)

OpenOffice.org documents are in ODF format. Great. So you can read ODF documents with OpenOffice.

Um....OK. But we want world domination on this. We want to be able to email ODF documents around to everyone, and everyone can open them for free. Without having to download OpenOffice if they don't want to.

We can already do that with PDF files. That's because of the Adobe PDF Reader program that's built into pretty much every computer on the planet.

So what do we need for ODF files? Well, clearly, an ODF reader application.

Wily Yuen tipped me off to this. There's a new extension in development for FireFox called ODFReader.

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=1888

The extension is still very early in development and needs more effort to further its progress. However, it could go a long way to help the spread of ODF.
